Child and Youth Victim Support Service (CVSS) - Burnaby - New Westminster

Provided by Cameray Child and Family Services

Provides support to children and youth who are victims or witnesses of a crime.
CVSS Program Focus: To provide support to children and youth (under 19) who are victims or witnesses of a crime, along with their non-offending family members.

Referrals must meet one of the following criteria:
  • Reside in Burnaby or New Westminster
  • Crime took place in Burnaby or New Westminster
  • Court proceedings are taking place in New Westminster or Vancouver (for Burnaby cases)

Participation in the program is voluntary and can begin at any stage of the legal process. Services are provided by well-trained, caring, and non-judgmental staff.

What the Program Provides:
  • Emotional support during police investigations and court proceedings
  • Resources and referrals to relevant community agencies throughout the criminal justice process
  • Assistance with safety planning
  • Explanation of the criminal justice system and the roles within (e.g., Police, Crown Counsel, Judge, etc.)
  • Up-to-date information regarding the status of investigations and court proceedings
  • Support with justice-related forms and applications (e.g., Crime Victim Assistance Program applications, Victim Impact Statements, etc.)
  • Court preparation sessions for young victims or witnesses
  • Accompaniment to court and justice-related meetings
Additional Support:
  • Support provided over the phone and/or in person, based on individual needs
  • For children and youth subpoenaed to testify in court, multiple court preparation sessions can be arranged with a victim support worker prior to the court date.
