Parking Permits for People with Disabilities

People who qualify for parking permits either need the extra room to get in and out of their vehicles when using a wheelchair, crutches, a cane or other mobility aid, or need to park close to a building entrance because their health prevents them from walking very far.
Based on a physician’s recommendation, anyone with a permanent or temporary mobility limitation is eligible for a parking permit for people with disabilities. Please see the attached permit form below and take to a physician/health care provider. A physician must assess the individual and confirm that the applicant is limited by one or more of the following conditions:
- Applicant cannot walk any distance without the assistance of another person or a mobility aid
- Applicant cannot walk 100 metres without risk to health
- Applicant has a disability that affects mobility, and the ability to walk specifically
People with mobility limitations are entitled to a permit even if they do not own a vehicle. As long as the parking permit holder is either driving or being transported in the vehicle, a valid parking permit may be displayed on the rearview mirror when the vehicle is parked in a designated spot.
If you have mobility limitations and wish to apply for a parking permit, you must complete a parking permit application form in its entirety and have your physician complete Section 2 of the form. Both you and your doctor must sign the application. A carefully completed application accompanied by the processing fee can be processed within 2 to 3 weeks. Acceptable forms of payment are cheque, money order, Visa, MasterCard or Interac if applying in person. Cash is not accepted. The SPARC BC Permit Processing Fee is $31.00.
Permits issued for permanent disabilities must be renewed every three years. Temporary permits will be valid for a period of time as determined by the physician (for a maximum of one year).
