Moving Forward Counselling Services

Provided by Moving Forward Family Services Society

Offers free short-term and affordable long-term counselling options to underserved communities across Canada via in-person, telephone, and online platforms.
Moving forward offers counselling programs and various support groups.

The Moving Forward Program is a free 12-session psycho-education and coaching program based on cognitive behavioural therapy, solution-focused therapy, positive psychology, and mindfulness. These sessions can be delivered one to three times per week over the phone or online. Topics include depression, anxiety, stress management, healthy relationships, and healthy coping strategies. Note this is a one-to-one coaching program and not intended for deep clinical counselling work. The minimum age is 16 to participate.

Moving Forward is a counselling service that is not funded and therefore operates on cost recovery. Low cost and free services are delivered by fully insured, fully supervised interns on practicum or volunteers with a background in counselling or social work.
Services are for those who are not eligible for other services in the community (or face long waitlists) and/or who cannot afford traditional counselling service rates. Moving Forward can also refer clients to private fee-based clinical counsellors who provide services to those who cannot afford traditional private therapy rates.
Offices are in Newton (Surrey), Abbotsford, Gastown/Downtown Eastside (Vancouver), Burnaby, Langley, Victoria and White Rock.

Costs:
  • Low cost, $50 - $65 services are available in Surrey, Vancouver (the Downtown Eastside area) and Abbotsford offices.
  • Counselling with Clinical Counsellors for $50 for individuals with no waits
  • Counselling with Clinical Counsellors $65 for couples and families with no waits
  • If cost is a barrier, we offer lower fee services with interns on practicums with a wait of up to 8 weeks. In exceptional circumstances, we can further reduce or waive the fee; the waits for this service can be up to 20 weeks
The program provides the following options for counselling:
  • Counselling with a Clinical Counsellor ($50 individual /$65 for couples and families). If you chose this option, please be advised that services are provided by the Counsellor (not Moving Forward Family Services (MFFS)); MFFS simply provides the referral to the Counsellor. All subsequent correspondence should be with the Counsellor, and any Client-related material is kept by that Counsellor.
  • $20 services with fully insured, supervised Interns on practicums. Note that there may be limited services available on evenings and weekends for this service.
  • Services for less than $20 with fully insured, supervised Interns on practicums. *Note that these services are only available during the weekdays, between 9 am and 4 pm
