Outpatient Nutrition Counselling

Outpatient dietitians provide medical nutrition therapy through one-to-one counselling for all age groups and nutrition education classes.
The goal of medical nutrition therapy is to promote healthy eating, well-being, and help individuals manage a variety of chronic health conditions such as heart disease, digestive issues, food allergies or intolerances.

Services include:
  • Nutrition assessment
  • Food and nutrition education including tips for meal planning and grocery shopping
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy and counselling for prevention and treatment of malnutrition and chronic disease management

How can an outpatient dietitian help?
One-to-one nutrition counselling with a registered dietitian:
  • Chronic health conditions: heart disease, gout, osteoporosis, liver disease, etc.
  • Digestive issues: Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, etc.
  • Tube feeding at home
  • Malnutrition
  • Food allergies, sensitivities and intolerances
  • Feeding children: picky eaters, poor growth

What to expect for one-to-one nutrition counselling:
Your initial visit will take about 60 minutes and the dietitian will ask you about your:
  • Food choices and eating pattern
  • Medical history
  • Blood work
  • Medications and vitamin/mineral/herbal supplements
  • Health goals

The goal is to work with you to develop an individual nutrition plan through education, meal planning and goal setting. If needed, follow-up session(s) will be scheduled and usually take about 30 minutes each.

Group classes are lead by a registered dietitian at select Fraser Health sites:
  • Heart health
  • Celiac disease

Referral:
A clinical referral is required. Once a referral is received the client will be called to book an appointment.
