Palliative & Grief Support - Surrey

Provided by Surrey Hospice Society

Offers a wide variety of services and programs for hospice & palliative support, as well as grief support for adults, children and youth.
Hospice & Palliative Support:
  • One to One Client Support: Offer practical and emotional support and companionship for the journey, whether it be at home, in the hospital or in a residential care facility.
  • One to One Family Support: Offer emotional and practical support, assistance and information to family members.
  • Respite Services: Provide family and primary caregivers with a brief respite or pause, usually 2-4 hours, from their caregiving responsibilities
  • Residence Visiting: Volunteers visit daily the Palliative Care and Tertiary Units.
  • Telephone Support t: Telephone support volunteers reach out to family/friend caregivers, providing a compassionate presence and a listening ear.
  • Referral Palliative Care Services: Surrey Hospice Society Coordinator may refer client/family to other appropriate palliative programs.

Adult Grief Support
  • Individual and Group Counselling: Bereaved groups or individuals are offered a moderate number of counselling sessions with a registered clinical counsellor
  • Grief Companions: Trained volunteers who know about the grief process and can provide a compassionate presence. Many grief companions can speak in different languages.
  • The Healing Pathway A walking support group for grieving adults which combines nature, exercise, connection with fellow mourners, and therapeutic mindfulness activities to process grief.
  • Mail Outreach Program: Provide information to bereaved individuals and their families about the different kinds of bereavement support offered by Surrey Hospice Society during the first year after a death
  • Natures Amble: Walking support group for grieving adults which combines nature, connection, and exercise to process grief.
  • Finding my Way: A six-week reflective support group for bereaved adults
  • Overdose Loss group: Overdose Loss Group is a 6-week group support group focused on healing the traumatic loss of a loved one due to overdose.
  • Coffee Mornings: An informal friendly weekly drop-in program that allows mourners to connect with each other as well as access grief support

Child & Youth Grief Support
  • Child, Youth & Family Counselling: Bereaved families or individuals are offered a moderate number of counselling sessions with a registered clinical counsellor who specializes in child, youth and family grief work
  • Hopeful Hearts: Offers therapeutic support for bereaved children aged 5-12 who have experienced a loss of someone significant in their lives.
  • Teen Drop-In Group: is a grief support group for teens 13-19 who have experienced loss through the death of someone significant in their life.
Online Grief Support:
  • Finding Peace After Losing a Pet: This group is free, curriculum-based, and led by a counsellor. Participation is for six weeks. Thursday evenings, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
  • Spousal Loss: This group is a free six-week curriculum-based support group led by a counsellor for individuals grieving the loss of a life partner. A reservation is required. 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm (one Wednesday evening per week)
  • Traumatic Loss: This group is a free 8-week curriculum-based support group led by a counsellor for individuals with a traumatic loss. 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm (one Tuesday evening per week)
  • Parental Loss: This group is a free 5-week curriculum-based support group led by a counsellor for individuals grieving parental loss.
  • Substance / Overdose Loss: This group is a free 6-week curriculum-based Substance / Overdose Loss support group led by a counsellor. 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm (one Wednesday evening per week)
