Perspectives Substance Use Counselling Services for Youth & Families

Provides free counselling, education, referral and support to children and adolescents who are either experiencing substance use difficulties or are affected by someone else’s substance use.
Perspectives Substance Use Counselling Services for Youth & Families is for youth aged 12 to 18 years or for children under 12 years with a parent or guardian as the primary client. This service is primarily for youth living in New Westminster and their parents, guardians, partners, families and schools.

Youth and their families who benefit from this service want to:
  • Make changes to their substance use
  • Receive help with mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression
  • Reduce involvement with the criminal justice system
  • Improve relationships with family and friends
  • Improve chances of success at school and work
Perspectives counsellors have a graduate degree (Masters level or higher) or undergraduate degree with extensive experience as substance use clinicians. Counselors act as a liaison with community agencies to find appropriate community resources for youth and families dealing with substance use issues. They offer support in a safe, confidential and non-judgmental atmosphere and offer help to:
  • Figure out what is going on through assessment and consultation
  • Liaise with community agencies and other professionals to find help and appropriate resources; organize travel
  • Set goals that are important to you
  • Educate you, your family and/or the community about substance use issues
  • Counselling services are offered on a weekly and bi-weekly basis. There is no fee for counselling services.
Referral Process: Any youth aged 12 to 18 years of age, or children under 12 years of age accompanied by a parent or guardian, living in New Westminster can self-refer by making an intake appointment via phone or visiting our office. Intake appointment times are arranged by counsellors. There is no fee for intake appointments.

Referrals can also come from a family member or friend; school counsellor or a representative from a school; community group or social service organization; a professional of the medical, mental health care or legal system.
