The city of Burnaby offers a range of non-medical support services for residents aged 65 and older, including help with daily tasks, transportation to medical appointments, and social visits.
Programs for seniors include:
  • Better at Home: Funded by the Government of BC and managed by the United Way of the Lower Mainland, Better at Home provides these services to help seniors live in your own home longer.
  • Light House Keeping: The fee for light housekeeping services is based on a sliding scale according to income. To determine eligibility for a subsidy, contact the Better at Home office at 604-294-7980 before applying.
  • Transportation to Medical Appointments: Transportation to and from medical appointments by certified volunteers is available, with fees based on a sliding scale according to income.
  • Phone Buddy: Enjoy a weekly chat with a volunteer and build a lasting friendship.
  • Volunteer Visitor: Regular volunteer visits are available to provide companionship.
  • Shopping Buddy: Volunteers can assist with shopping, and HandyDART transportation to and from Brentwood, Lougheed Town Centre, or Metrotown Mall can be arranged, where a volunteer will meet on site.
  • Shop by Phone: Weekly grocery shopping can be arranged through volunteer phone support, with payment by credit card and delivery provided by a City of Burnaby staff member.
  • Lunch Program: Enjoy a social lunch at one of the Burnaby seniors' centres. Volunteer drivers provide free transportation to and from.
  • Gadabouts Bus Outings: Join for a bus trip once a month. These trips involve a scenic drive and a lovely lunch out.
  • Wheelers Outings: Seniors who use a wheelchair and live independently in Burnaby come together for an outing or lunch.
